Art Faculty Building :
This sketch shows the initial concept study for a school in Cumbria where the walls are designed as partly translucent to reduce the electrical footprint for lighting and heating. It is currently progressing through educational funding.
( The standard art block normally has either north light or artificial light and similar basic thoughtless heating systems )
This design goes back to principles and uses orientation, controlled natural light and insulation methods three times that of current requirements.
The result will be a building that not only avoids the reliance on artificial light but almost excludes a heating system.
With water containment on roof structures for pottery wings, painting studios and the toilet block, the overall carbon footprint and running costs more than offset the actual building costs to below that of a standard art block.
It is… after all, an art faculty, and should express itself as a bed of imagination.
